Why Telehealth Speech Therapy Matters for Our Clients and Iowa’s Rural Communities

At Iowa Speech Solutions, we know that access to quality speech therapy can be a challenge, especially for older adults, caregivers, and those living in rural communities across Iowa. That’s why telehealth has become such an important part of how we care for our clients. It allows us to bring evidence-based speech, language, voice, and swallowing therapy directly into your home.

What Telehealth Speech Therapy Looks Like

Telehealth sessions are far more than a simple video call. Using secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms likeSimplePractice and Doxy.me, we provide personalized and interactive care for adults across the state.

Examples of a typical session, we may:

  • Provide cognitive-communication therapy for individuals with brain injury, stroke, or memory changes
  • Support recovery after stroke through tailored speech, language, and communication exercises
  • Offer dementia communication training for families and care partners
  • Conduct voice therapy for Parkinson’s disease, vocal strain, or age-related voice changes

Each session includes interactive tools such as screen sharing, virtual whiteboards for note-taking and practice, and follow-up resources you can review afterward. Many clients say it feels as though we’re right there in the room with them, guiding step by step.

Why It Matters

Telehealth has opened doors for many Iowans who might otherwise go without therapy.

Accessibility: Clients in rural areas no longer need to drive long distances to receive care. Or for clients who cannot drive either temporarily or permanently.
Consistency: Seniors or those with mobility challenges can maintain regular sessions, even on days when travel feels difficult.
Caregiver Inclusion: Family members can join virtually from anywhere to learn communication strategies and support carryover.
Empowerment: Clients can practice skills right in their own functional and familiar environment, making therapy more meaningful and relevant to daily life.

For many, this approach has transformed access to therapy; especially for those balancing caregiving, health limitations, or unpredictable schedules.

The Limitations

While telehealth offers tremendous flexibility, certain swallowing evaluations and hands-on techniques are best completed in person. When needed, we work with clients to coordinate in-home visits or office-based assessments to ensure comprehensive care.

Important Note About Coverage

Please be aware that CMS Medicare and Medicaid coverage for telehealth speech therapy has changed as of September 30, 2025. Currently CMS is not allowing coverage of telehealth for speech therapy. Private pay options are available. We are closely monitoring these updates and will communicate any changes directly with our clients. Regardless of coverage changes, our commitment to flexible, accessible, and compassionate care remains unwavering.

The Heart of Our Mission

At its core, telehealth allows us to meet people where they are. For many Iowans, it has opened the door to care that once felt out of reach, and that is what matters most.
